The piņa handweaving industry dates to the Spanish times. At present, production of the fiber and weaving of the cloth are confined chiefly in Aklan where the capital town, Kalibo, is the acknowledged center of piņa craft. The womenfolk of Aklan handed down the skills from one generation to another.

One enterprise located in Old Buswang, Kalibo, Aklan, the La Herminia Piņa Weaving Industry, Inc. (La Herminia), has proven that piņa handloom weaving is heading to a most promising future.  Science and Technology (S&T) innovations developed and introduced by the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI), an agency of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), on the tools, equipment, techniques, and related processes ensured easy operation, improved efficiency and productivity, and produced novel and better quality products.
