PTRI Technology
The PTRI brought and transferred a package of technologies to Marinduque, particularly to the people of Torrijos, through repeated conduct of basic and advance training courses on handloom weaving and textile dye application using commercial dyes. Initially, PTRI trainers demonstrated the technology of weaving to 16 participants. They were then taught the basics of dressing and operating a handloom.
It was a requirement to practice the art of weaving for at least three consecutive months before one was allowed attendance to the Advance Handloom Weaving Course. Here, the weavers learned how to analyze and execute different weave designs in a handloom with maximum of six harnesses. The trainees were also taught fiber pretreatment and proper dyeing techniques. The trainers patiently explained the aspect of color matching which helped them create color schemes adaptive to various market needs. Through DTI’s assistance, a cooperative named The Torrijos Loom Weavers Multi-Purpose Cooperative, Inc. (TLW-MPCI) was established consisting initially of six members, all of whom participated in the training courses provided by the PTRI. The cooperative initially purchased two units of two-harness looms from Murami Industries of Bicol, replicating the PTRI two-harness jack-type loom that was used during the technology demonstration. By 1990, the association owned 32 units of handlooms. Some of the two-harness looms were converted by PTRI into four-harness for the production of more intricate weave designs.
By this time, the
PTRI trainers had conducted two basic and five advance handloom
weaving training courses for TLW-MPCI. Membership in the
cooperative at this time numbered about 40. During this period, a
weaver earned an average of |
