The Woman Behind DAWN

Behind the provision of new hope for distressed women’s rights and their Japanese-Filipino children is Ms. Carmelita G. Nuqui, DAWN’s executive director since its establishment in 1996.  She is a graduate of Bachelor of Arts, Major in Communication Arts, and Master in Business Administration of the University of Santo Tomas (UST).  She has been a co-organizer, resource person, and participant in several conferences and fora relative to the upholding of immigrants’ rights, racial discrimination, and overseas absentee voting law, magna carta for seafarers, human trafficking, and sexual exploitation of children.

Ms. Nuqui is also the president of the Philippine Migrants Rights Watch (PMRW), a registered civil society network established in 1995 to encourage the recognition, protection, and fulfillment of Filipino Migrants Rights, both in the Philippines and abroad, during the entire migration process.

Tita Mel, as she is fondly called, finds fulfillment in her heartful dedication of her time to development work. The warm endless hugs, embraces, kisses, and thank you’s she gets from JFCs, women, and volunteers inspire her to carry on her aspirations.
