MOTORIZED PRESSING MACHINE FOR ABACA FABRIC
PTRI Release, October 13, 2004

A Rotary Press was collaboratively designed and fabricated by two agencies of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), the Philippine Textile Research Institute (PTRI) and Metals Industry Research and Development Center.  This machine has three 4-inch steel rollers to flatten and even out sinamay fabrics that are commonly called pinukpok. Run by a motor, this rotary press can process from 30-50 meters of abaca fabric and can withstand bending loads under extreme weather conditions.  With addition of chemicals, the fabrics easily become softer, smoother and more lustrous.

A response to the growing need of abaca processors to increase productivity, this rotary press was brought to Malilipot, Albay where it would serve as a common service facility to all abaca pinukpok producers.

It is envisioned that the use of the developed abaca processor will help increase productivity in view of the promising investment opportunity to earn the major share in the 600,000 tons of annual global abaca requirements.

Though designed specifically for abaca fabric, this machine can also press pineapple, banana, buntal and other fine natural fibers for high value added products. (Malu A. Flores, PTRI Media Service)
