Project #1: Upscale verification of Water-Repellent Finishing Technology for Natural Fiber-Blended Textiles

Objectives:

General: To verify on a pilot scale the water-repellent finishing technology for natural-fiber blended textiles

Specific: 

  1. To test the feasibility of commercially-available silane for water-repellent finishing of fabrics
  2. To establish parameters of woven fabrics
  3. To verify on a pilot-scale the water-repellent finishing technology
  4. To evaluate the performance and physical properties of the developed textiles

Project #2: Enhancement in Philippine Indigo Natural Dyeing Technology through the Use of -Hydroxyketone as Alternative reducing agents

Objectives:

General: To enhance Philippine indigo dyeing technology using -Hydroxyketones as alternative reducing agents.

Specific: 

  1. To evaluate the reduction efficiency in indigo dyeing using glucose, hydroxyacetone, 3-hydroxy-2-butanone and their combination;
  2. To determine the optimum parameters for indigo dyeing using alternative reducing agents;
  3. To assess the reproducibility and repeatability of the improved technology;
  4. To evaluate the performance of naturally dyed materials using the optimized parameters for indigo dyeing.

Expected Outputs: 

-Enhance Philippine indigo dyeing technology

-Prototype of indigo dyed abaca, cotton, pineapple, silk, pineapple-silk fabrics

-Technical paper

Project #3: Integrated Extraction and Degumming Process for Indigenous Fibers for Textile Application

Objectives:

General: To improve the productivity of the extraction and degumming process using the modified machines for pineapple  leaf fibers.

Specific: 

  1. To improve the extraction process of pineapple fibers using the modified machine for enhanced productivity;
  2. To optimize and establish the degumming process using the integrated method of decortication and degumming of pineapple leaf fibers;
  3. To determine the technical viability and cost competitiveness of the said integrated process;
  4. To secure an IP protection.

-Technology on improved extraction process of pineapple leaf fibers

-IP application (UM product claim)

Project #4: Spinning Performanceof Philippine Bamboo Fibers

Objectives:

General: To determine the potential of the Philippine bamboo varieties as textile fiber source

Specific: 

  1. To verify/validate extraction process for selected Philippine bamboo variety;
  2. To establish spinning parameters and settings for pure bamboo or blended bamboo yarns;
  3. To conduct property test on pure or blended bamboo yarns;
  4. To develop prototype  fabric from bamboo yarns;
  5. To conduct cost analysis of the process and product.

-Verified extraction process for the selected bamboo varieties

Project #5: Revitalization of Silk Industry in Northern Mindanao (Year 1)

Objectives:

General: To revitalize silk industry that will complement the manufacture of the Philippine silk fabrics for local and international market.

Specific: 

  1. To support silk yarn of the Aklan, Lumban, Taal communities towards increased material production;
  2. To produce substantial volume of cocoons and maximize the PTRI reeling facility into full-running capacity;
  3. To enhance technology promotion and commercialization to ably engage more farmers into cocoon growing  hence enabling the supply to market;
  4. To ensure the existing facilities facilities for cocoon production at the TCMO are sufficiently upgraded to meet industry demands;
  5. To promote multi-sectoral agreements through institutional linkages with various sericulture stakeholders;
  6. To establish a silk filature plant in Northern Mindano to support the need of market and industry.

Expected Outputs: 

- Two (2) hectares of mulberry field established

-60 kgs fresh cocoons produced

-2 farmers revived into cocoon production

Project #6: Nonwoven Acoustic Wall Fabrics from Abaca

General: To diversify the application of natural fiber based nonwovens for acoustic application.

Specific: 

  1. To optimize the parameters on nonwoven processing of polyester/abaca for acoustics;
  2. To develop natural fiber based nonwoven fabrics from abaca blended with polyester for acoustics;
  3. To evaluate the properties and performance of the nonwoven fabrics.

Expected Outputs: 

-Nonwoven fabrics from polyester/abaca for acoustic applications

-Prototype nonwoven fabrics for acoustics

Project #7: Sequential Chemical-Mechanical-Enzymatic Pretreatment of Abaca and Pineapple Fibers

General: To develop a sequential chemical-mechanical-enzymatic pretreatment process for abaca and pineaple fibers.

Specific: 

  1. To optimize the parameters on pretreatment of abaca and pineapple fibers through sequential chemical, mechanical and enzymatic processes;
  2. To evaluate the performance/pro'perty of pretreted abaca

and pineapple fibers.

Expected Outputs: 

- Technology in the integrated-Prototype nonwoven fabrics for acoustics chemical-enzymatic pretreatment of   abaca and pineapple fibers

-Prototype abaca and pineapple fiber-based yarns from the developed pretreatment process

-IP application (UM product claim)
