Strengthening the Inaul Weaving Industry through DOST-PTRI’s Silk Research and Innovation Ecosystem

The Department of Science and Technology - Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) through its technology center in Misamis Oriental hosted a meeting on May 15, 2025, where the SEDA Pilipinas Team, welcomed the Ministry of Trade, Investment, and Tourism (MTIT) – Maguindanao Provincial Office, headed by Provincial Director Romeo N. Diocolano.

GThe purpose of the meeting is to learn from DOST-PTRI's Silk Research and Innovation Center (SRIC) and agro-techno-based ecosystem, with the focus on strengthening the Inaul textile industry through innovation, sustainability, and cultural preservation.The Institute presented the Philippine Silk Road Program, outlining the current state and future direction of the Philippine silk value chain. The discussion centered on the potential to revitalize Maguindanao’s Inaul weaving industry, by introducing new strategies that promote innovation and sustainability.

Representatives from MTIT expressed their interest in enhancing the skills of local artisans and fostering development strategies rooted in local culture. PD Diocolano raised questions about the challenges and opportunities in silk production.

The meeting concluded with a tour of the DOST-PTRI Technology Center, where the representatives from MTIT visited the silk exhibit room, the silkworm rearing house, and the silk processing facilities.
